Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL)

KU Leuven is a research-intensive and internationally-oriented university that performs both fundamental and applied scientific research. KU Leuven was founded in 1425 and now is one of Europe’s oldest universities and the oldest extant Catholic university in the world. KU Leuven has been ranked #1 in declared Most Innovative University of Europe by Reuters 4 years in a row, #42 in Times Higher Education World University Ranking (2022), and #70 in QS (2022). We have more than 60000 students and 22000 employees from 15 faculties of 13 campuses, spread across 10 cities in Flanders.

Across the university, driven researchers and curious students continually gain new insights and use their knowledge to tackle the foremost challenges of our time. From Renaissance philosophy to cutting-edge nanotechnology: KU Leuven has promoted ground-breaking research and high-quality education throughout its storied existence. We are dedicated to education and research in nearly all fields. We continue to work on creating a context where researchers and academics feel comfortable and can develop a flexible and sustainable career and make the best use of their talents, while still allowing room for all other important aspects of life.

Within the VOLTCAR project, KU Leuven is represented by its Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics (LMSD) research group. LMSD aims at creating added value during every phase (design – manufacturing – operations) in the lifetime of mecha(tro)nic systems by understanding, monitoring and controlling their dynamic (motion-vibration-acoustics) behaviour. To this end, the research conducted at LMSD spans a broad spectrum from methodologies, over theoretical foundations, to various application domains.

The KU Leuven Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics research group strives for international leadership in engineering dynamics through excellent research, education and services; building upon an expertise of five decades and with the Digital Twin concept playing a central role in its roadmap. Dynamic behaviour models, validated and enriched with dynamic measurement data, allow for a continuously updated virtual replica of a structure or system.

This powerful concept brings added value in every phase of the product lifecycle. Digital Twins drive the design, analysis and testing phases as well as the manufacturing and assembly in order to achieve the envisaged dynamic performance. Furthermore, Digital Twins also enable intelligent monitoring and control during the entire operational lifetime of the structure or system to get optimal performance given its actual state and condition and given the planned and anticipated usage and load scenarios at that moment.

Cross-fertilization between strategic basic research, application oriented developments and technology transfer activities is key. Being at the origin of spin-off company LMS International, now Siemens Industry Software, and serving as core group of Flanders Make, the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry in Flanders, illustrate that industrial and societal relevance are essential drivers, along with multidisciplinary partnerships and inter-sectorial cooperation. Applications focus on industrial machinery and manufacturing, transportation, energy supply and health care. The organisation of the yearly ISMA, ISAAC, and ISAMS courses, and the biennial ISMA-USD conference on Noise & Vibration Engineering and Uncertainty in Structural Dynamics, and the group’s presence on dedicated digital media, are key dissemination elements, next to top journal publications and presentations at reference conferences and workshops.
